- The EU waste regulation will, above all, be a major challenge for businesses. They will have to design their products, but also their services, in a more environmentally friendly way, Deputy Minister for Climate and Environment Anita Sowińska told journalists in Brussels after Monday's meeting of the European Union Environment Council.
Packaging and packaging waste, monitoring and resilience of soils and forests were the main topics of the EU Environment Council (ENVI) meeting. The meeting, held on 18 December 2023 in Brussels, was attended by Anita Sowinska, Deputy Minister for Climate and Environment.
The main topic of the meeting was the regulation on waste and packaging waste, which, the deputy minister stressed, is of great importance for Poland. She explained that its aim is to move towards a closed-loop economy, so that "waste is prevented rather than dealt with".
- Poland's position is that the objectives of the closed loop economy should be as ambitious as possible and, above all, realistic, measurable, technically feasible and sustainable, i.e. taking into account not only environmental, but also economic and social aspects. The transition to a Closed Circuit Economy requires both taking into account the needs of business and society, as well as appropriate education of the public, said Anita Sowińska, Deputy Minister for Climate and Environment, during the meeting.
Eco-design
Sowinska pointed out that entrepreneurs face a big challenge. - They will have to design their products, but also their services, in a more environmentally friendly way. Of course, there will be an adjustment period. I would like consultations with entrepreneurs to start as early as possible, so that we can prepare our Polish entrepreneurs for these changes, said the deputy minister. The deputy minister emphasised that when designing regulations, unnecessary standardisation of packaging should be avoided.
- We see some difficulties in being able to realistically meet the targets for per capita packaging waste reduction and for recyclable packaging. That is why we advocate postponing the deadlines for achieving the targets in this area by 5 years," she pointed out.
NIP funds for energy transformationtical
Asked about the advance payment of EUR 5 billion from the NIP for Poland, she emphasised that these funds will be used primarily for energy transformation, prevention of smog formation, e.g. through thermal modernisation of houses and replacement of non-ecological heat sources. - An important issue is the transmission networks, so that we can enable the development of RES, including windmills, in Poland. These are issues that are only just beginning in Poland, such as hydrogen technologies, which are extremely important from the point of view of storing energy from RES," Sowińska stressed.
