Operational risks that cannot be ignored
The storage safety of lithium-ion batteries is today a real operational challenge, not a formality to be ticked off in the documentation. One broken cell is enough for the threat to appear suddenly and without warning. Therefore, more and more companies in the automotive, logistics and recycling sectors are asking themselves: do our procedures really protect people, infrastructure and business continuity?
The specificity of lithium-ion batteries means that their storage and transportation require a completely different approach than traditional hazardous materials.
Cutting off air access does not always lead to extinguishing the fire. In the case of a damaged cell, the reaction can also take place in a sealed package. This means that standard security methods do not guarantee complete control of the situation.
Mechanical damage, overheating or a design defect can trigger the so-called uncontrolled thermal reaction. This process often proceeds very dynamically and is difficult to stop once it has started.
During a fire, water primarily performs a cooling function. The combustion process itself often continues until the natural extinction of the chemical reaction inside the cell. This further underlines the importance of prevention and proper preparation of the warehouse infrastructure.
At Wastes Service Group, security is not an addition to the service, but its foundation. We minimize risk by combining technology, procedures and operational experience.
Safe Battery Warehouse is a special solution developed by WSG for the safe storage and transportation of batteries, especially in the automotive industry.
Containers are monitored around the clock and equipped with:
• GSM sensors
• temperature sensors
• tilt and shock sensors
Constant monitoring allows for a quick response in the event of malfunctions and ensures full safety control throughout the logistics cycle of the battery.
Specialized steel ASP containers meet the requirements of the ADR agreement on the transport of hazardous materials. They are airtight, resistant to mechanical damage and designed in such a way that in case of ignition, fire and high temperature do not escape to the outside.
This solution significantly reduces the risk of the threat spreading to the surroundings and infrastructure of the plant.
Each organization operates in different conditions and on a different scale. Therefore, together with our customers, we design dedicated storage and transport systems, adapted to:
• type of battery
• Operating volume
• the specifics of the infrastructure
• applicable regulations
The process includes risk analysis, development of procedures and implementation of technical and organizational solutions.
In an era of increasing number of batteries in circulation and the dynamic development of electromobility, proper risk management is becoming an element of competitive advantage. Properly designed storage and transportation systems protect not only the infrastructure, but also the reputation and operational continuity of the enterprise.
We invite you to contact us and make an appointment with our specialists. We will be happy to present our safety standards and prepare a solution tailored to your needs.
